While the origin of the passion fruit is unknown, it is generally believed to have come from Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Argentina. The 16th-century Spanish Catholics called it “flor de las cinco llagas” (or: “flower of the five wounds”) after its distinctive purple color flower.
Passion fruit is grown almost everywhere in the tropical belt. The passion fruit is round to oval, yellow or dark purple at maturity, with a soft to firm juicy interior, filled with numerous seeds. It has intense and aromatic flavor characteristics.
